BMW 1-series chases low emissions
A series of super-economical versions from the upcoming front-drive BMW 1-series is inside the works, and can likely be sold beneath the firm’s EfficientDynamics (ED ) banner. One from the drivetrains is a plug-in hybrid that uses either a three-cylinder petrol or diesel engine. This model is predicted to become rated below 50g / km under current EU regulations. There may also be super-frugal 1-series models which use more conventional technology, including optimised aerodynamics, lowered suspension, underbody cladding and narrower wheels and tyres. It’s also expected the automatic versions from the 1-series will have the choice of the built-in, fuel-saving coasting feature. However, BMW sources have hinted to Autocar that it ED and hybrid technology may not be shared with Mini, although new Mini family and also the 1-series share a similar platform. One senior source said the majority from the BMW 1-series range had the need to have really low CO2 ratings to assist offset the higher emissions of BMW’s larger models. Consistent with EU rules, the typical CO2 figure across a manufacturer’s fleet will need to be just 95g / km by 2020. BMW 1-series chases low emissions
